Puerto de la Cruz is a small town in the north of the island of Tenerife with a long coastline where a few black (yes, black!) Beaches can be found that will be greatly appreciated by the kids. Apart from the beach, there is much more nature to be found in and around Puerto de la Cruz where you can discover everything with the children.
Did you know that Puerto de la Cruz has grown from a small fishing village into a tourist resort, unlike other towns on the island that were really designed for tourism?
First Stop: The Botanical Gardens
In Puerto de la Cruz, plants from all over the world can be found in the botanical garden on the Marqués de Villanueva boulevard . This botanical monument has all kinds of different gardens and parks where plants and trees survive outside their original habitat. Much can be learned about the more than 300 species of trees and plants, both for the kids and for the parents.
Tip: One of the highlights of the botanical garden is the giant ficus, with all its above-ground branches and roots that provide an impressive picture.
Also within reach: El Teide National Park
In this park you can find the largest mountain in all of Spain: El Pico del Teide , a sleeping volcano. This is a great park for kids, because it is not every day that they will see the moon-like landscapes and remains of volcanic eruptions with their own eyes!
There is a cable car that goes to the top, but if you are really a sporty family, you can walk or cycle upstairs just like your fellow nature lovers. Walks are organized with which you can join for free, and under supervision you can make a beautiful trip through this World Heritage monument that even the youngest members of the family can handle.
The Teno mountains
This is a paradise for walking families who like a challenge. Along the way you will pass the most beautiful trees and plants and if the reward is a nice picnic, the day will probably not be broken for the kids.
In this valley the whole family goes back to the 70s, when the area was first opened to tourists. The valley is located in the Teno Mountains, between two mountains, and even though Converse All Stars are all the way back in the 70s, they should stay in the hotel – good sport shoes or mountain hiking shoes will take you much further!
Orotava valley : This valley lies in the footsteps of the largest mountain El Pico del Teide and has beautiful nature that you will not encounter at home. For the parents it is a huge plus if they know that this is the wine region of the island.
Anaga Mountains : The walks on these mountains can be quite challenging for the kids so just see how far you go, but no matter where that is, you will be surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna.
Puerto de la Cruz: This is how you get there
Get on the plane with the children and about 5 hours later you can get off at Tenerife Sud airport. From Schiphol you can fly directly with easyJet for around € 200, but from Eindhoven you can fly cheaper with Transavia or Ryanair. Once you have arrived in Tenerife you (and especially the kids) want to be quickly in the hotel or apartment in Puerto de la Cruz . With Shuttle Direct you can book the transfer that suits you best – we take care of the rest.
