Tenerife is the largest Canary Island and is ideal for beach holidays. Do you feel like sun, sea and tranquility? Then this is one of the better destinations to visit during your vacation. There are plenty of quiet activities to do in Puerto de la Cruz, but for a bit more action you will have to drive a bit.
Puerto de la Cruz was originally a small fishing village , but has now completely changed into a tourist town!
Welcome to Puerto de la Cruz
This city has a lot to offer in terms of nature and that is why it is also known as the ‘Blooming City’. The vegetation is very varied and very different from what we are used to, because of the climate and the influence of the active volcano Mount Teide . With a peak of 3718 meters high, El Pico del Teide is also the third largest island volcano in the world. You don’t necessarily have to go all the way up to see the influence of this giant of a volcano; the steep cliffs, rock formations, black beaches and exotic flora are a lot easier to reach!
The center of Puerto de la Cruz is mainly located on the coast, where most restaurants, bars, shops and especially ice cream parlors have found their place. The boulevard is also one of the most touristic places of the city and that is where you can find the most fun.
When it comes to places of interest, this beach destination does not have much to offer, but the Castillo San Felipe fort is worth a visit. From here you have a beautiful view of the Playa Jardín and Punta Brava .
The Most Beautiful Beaches of the Island
Playa Jardín is a special beach designed by the artist César Manrique, who mainly wanted to preserve and enhance the peace and relaxation of the area. This beach is one kilometer long, and that is exactly the distance between Punta Brava and the aforementioned Fort Castillo San Felipe . On the beach itself you will find a small kiosk where you can get a nice refreshing drink, but you can also walk to the boulevard and order a snack and a drink at the bars and restaurants.
Tip: The beach itself is special, but behind the Playa Jardín there are a number of very impressive gardens that are worth a visit.
Another special beach is again thanks to César Manrique: the Playa Martiánez . Here you will immediately notice that it is unspoilt and a lot easier than the other beach, but it is close to the Lago Martiánez lake . During a visit to this beach you can also enjoy a water park with salt water lakes, tropical gardens, rock formations of the volcano and even different waterfalls.
Tip: Have you gotten into swimming and sunbathing? Then I advise you to walk to the bistro by the beach or to one of the nearby bars or cafes, all of which have a view of the ocean.
Fancy a day out?
As I said before, Puerto de la Cruz is especially suitable for rest – so if you want to be a bit active, I would go to Playa de las Américas . This is the party capital of the island and there is a lot to experience both during the day but mainly in the evenings and at night. Just like in Las Vegas, there is a strip with the most important tents such as cabaret bars, discos, live music, restaurants and also shops. For sports, the 18-hole golf course of this city is also very famous and loved, so if this is your sport you can spend a few hours there.
Of course Playa de las Américas also has a great beach and here you can enjoy water sports – for example diving, windsurfing or jet skiing. Is the weather nice and do you want to go on the water for a day? Then book one of the boat excursions that depart from Playa de las Américas!
Pack your suitcase but stuck…
Departure from the Netherlands and after 5 hours hanging in the air you have arrived at the airport of Tenerife South , the nearest airport of Puerto de la Cruz . The cheapest flights depart from Eindhoven and are from Ryanair and Transavia, but if you prefer to travel from Schiphol, you can do so with easyJet. From Tenerife airport you can take a pre-booked transfer from Transfer Direct which will quickly bring you to your hotel in Puerto de la Cruz.
